A Finger Laken Good Time at Silver Queen Farms
By Franklyn Gallup of WoodFloorist.com
My brother, Gordie and his wife, Elizabeth own a U-pick farm near Trumansburg, New York in the Finger Lakes region. They grow strawberries, peaches, apples, nectarines, plums, summer squash, winter squash, cucumbers, brussel sprouts, carrots, broccoli, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, beans, peas, pumpkins, potatoes, asparagus, flowers, sweet corn and lettuce. Many of these are in large quantities and are available for U-Pick. Many local restaurants use his fresh produce and often it is at the local farmer's markets. Every year my brother throws a field party for family and friends and I was lucky enough to be able to make it to the party this year. It is like a huge family reunion. My brother who is known by kids and adults in the area as "Farmer Gordie" has a great place for such parties. My mother lives about 10 minutes away from the farm. I was staying with my mother during my visit and we made many trips to the farm while I was there. I had a fun time talking with Gordie about how he built the barn, the doors and rafters. He is planning on making it available as a unique venue for wedding receptions, and similar events. His plan is to hang old farm tools and equipment from the ceiling for a Applebee's type atmosphere. While the produce is in season the construction work has to wait. Gordie's chicken was done to perfection. My aunt Evie brought a whole container of Chocolate Jumbos. They are rich chocolate cookies with a hole in the middle like a flat doughnut with white icing. They were made according to my grandmother's recipe and brought back some childhood memories. Uncle Dennis brought Kolache (also spelled kolace, kolach, or kolacky). These are type of pastry that holds a dollop of fruit rimmed by a puffy pillow of supple dough. Originally they were a semi-sweet wedding dessert from Czechoslovakia and have become popular in parts of the United States. Often in the United States, kolaches are used for breakfast, stuffed with ham and cheese. My mother's side of the family has roots in Czechoslovakia where this pastry is from. My brother, John made a grand entrance to the party by bringing a miniature horse. John owns a horse boarding farm in upstate, New York. Everyone loved the little horse which is a full grown stallion. I took some pictures of Gordie's produce and was amazed at the variety of things that he grows. He has excellent prices and has a great personality for interacting with people. He especially has a great rapport with the children. I had to laugh when I was at the farm a few years ago during strawberry season. The kids would come ready to pick and have a great time. They would each get a bucket and the whole family would have fun. Farmer Gordie would bend down and remind the kids in his Farmer Gordie voice, "You remember the rules.. You have to eat while you pick" . The kids would giggle and Gordie would get a good laugh at their reactions. The kids would come back with strawberry juice all down their faces and all down their clothes and had a big smile when Farmer Gordie would say, " You did a good job. Many u-pick farms say you can't eat while you pick so this is a great way to interact with people. Gordie told me one family came in and picked 80 pounds of strawberries. People come from as far away a Pennsylvania just to pick strawberries at Silver Queen Farms. Farmer Gordie cooks plenty of chicken as my mother and a friend look on.

Cooking all thechicken ahead of time and putting them in a foil lined cooler allows Gordie to enjoy the party too when the guests arrive.

This is Gordie's new barn he built. It is huge. I think I saw this from the airplane as it was landing.

The ceiling of the center of the barn is amazing. Gordie installed it all himself.

This gives an idea how large this center seciton is.

Raspberries and peaches were in season while I was there

People stop by all during the day to pick up fresh produce like this.

Blue berries, raspberries, peaches and more

Gordie has really good prices

More good prices

The facilities have attracted the interest of a local catering service called Serndipity Catering. They call the event "The Farm & Fork"

These two signs aren't related but I had to laugh at their positioning.

Gordie finally gets some time to eat. There was plenty of great food.

Friends and relatives get to catch up on what has happened since the last party.

This is just the asparagus after it has gone to seed.

This is the raspberry patch with the building in the background from left to right: the chicken coop, the greenhouse and the house.

Gordie also grows a wide variety of flowers

I like the huge sun flowers

More flowers.

Thank you for sharing, it was almost like being there. It's awesome to hear about an environment-friendly business succeeding in these tough times. Your whole clan is blessed with tremendous energy and wisdom. One of these days - quite soon - I will take my kids strawberry-picking at Silver Queen Farms, child-labor laws be damned. I have to correct you about one thing, though, kolač is a Serbian specialty, and, while it was wise of the Czechs and Slovaks to appropriate it, I'm sure their version doesn't half as good as our version.

I grew up on a 300 acre dairy farm so it felt like coming home.
What a great farm. I would love to meet Farmer Gordie!! Next time I am in New York, I will try to get down to the Silver Queen. I didn't even know peaches would grow there.

My brother has a green thumb which I think he got from grampa Charlie. I loved to walk through grampa Charlie's green house when I was young. He could grow anything.
