A Personalized Lord's Prayer?
By Franklyn Gallup of BibleFree.org
The Lord's Prayer as it appears in Matthew 6:9-13 in the KJV reads as follows: Our Father which art in Heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. My question for you to consider is have you ever considered personalizing this prayer for times when you are alone? It would sound something like this: My Father which art in Heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in Heaven. Give me this day my daily bread. And forgive me my debts, as I forgive my debtors. And lead me not into temptation, but deliver me from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. I mean the first version is great for praying in a group or in church but the second version creates a personal relationship with God in addition to the group relationship you have. I recommend saying the second version slower than you usually say it and think about the meaning of what you are saying. You are asking God to forgive your debts as you forgive others. This means that if you don't forgive others and God gives you what you asked for your debts won't be forgiven either. I have also always found the word "it" in the Lord's Prayer a little interesting. Consider that the word "it" refers not to God's will but to the earth for a minute. Change the words "as it" in the above prayer to "since the earth" and you will see my meaning. If heaven is above anyplace in the world it would would seem to me that the earth is indeed "in Heaven". Give it some thought.

Very nice and thoughtful intel. Thanks for sharing.
"Thy will be done in earth, as it is in Heaven." This sentence is very specific and relates not to where the Earth might be but more to the alacrity with which God's will is carried out in Heaven. If people on Earth were as ready to do His will as people in Heaven - think of the huge benefits all round. Also remember that Matthew spoke against collective prayer "thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are" - "but thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy father". The form of the Lord's prayer takes account of the fact that even though single people may be praying, their voices shall combine to bring the message as though from all of God's worshippers. For personal prayer, speak to God as you would your best friend.
We live in both worlds -- The "Earth" and the spiritual. Thanks for the intel. Regards, Jim
Thank you for sharing this thought provoking intel, Franklyn. The world around us needs all the help that it can get. Best to you. Frederick
