A tool I created for sanding in tight places

By Franklyn Gallup of woodfloorist.com

Necessity is often the mother of invention. I have had several people tell me I should patent the tool I am about to tell you about.

While sanding wood floors there are some problem areas which I couldn't find a tool that would help very much. Under the old cast iron radiators and around the pipes on the end of the radiators are some examples of these types of places.

Between the spindles on stairs is another tight place as us between cabinets.

Under cast iron radiators there often isn't very much clearance to fit any kind of power tool I had at the time.

What I did is I went to Big Lots and found an inexpensive reciprocating saw for under $30. This is the kind of saw that is often called a Sawzall. Sawzall is the brand name for this type of saw. This is the saw that made Milwaukee famous right along with the beer.

I took a drill and drilled two small holes in the blade for my "new toy " and bolted a wooden paint stir stick for 5 gallon paint cans. to the blade. The paint stir stick is strong enough not to break but flexible enough to get in under tight places such as under the radiators.

Often I buy peel and stick sandpaper for my square buffer to cut into edger paper. These sheets of sandpaper come 18 inches by 12 inches. This is one of the most cost effective ways to buy sandpaper for my German floor edger. It uses 6 inch disks instead of the American standard 7 inch disk. I found that this heavy duty sandpaper worked very well for my new sander I had created.

I simply selected the grit of paper I needed for the task at hand and cut it with scissors to the width of the paint stir stick. I can also adjust the speed with which the blade reciprocates and this is very handy when sanding in small tight places.

This tool is a life saver when sanding the little 2 inch wide space between spindles on stairs. It also helps reach areas that are on the outside of the steps when there is a open space between the stairs going up and those going down.

The nice thing here is if I need a reciprocating saw for cutting off something in a tight spot i can simply remove the two bolts and I have a saw..

Cool idea, I like creative solutions! I've had sanding problems like this before myself.

I was using the paint stir stick by itself but that gets pretty hard on the hands.
