Could your laptop find it's way home if it were lost?
By Franklyn Gallup
This is something we should all be concerned about. We misplace our laptop or someone steals it. If it were found how would someone know how to return it to you? One thing you could do is put your name, address and phone number on your desktop screen picture. This is not that hard. Simply write something like this somewhere and then take a screen shot of it. (ctrl PrtScn) On my computer the PrtScn key is just above the "-_ " key. This computer belongs to Franklyn Gallup 22111 Old Hwy 99 SW Centralia,WA 98531 1-360-807-3122 This will copy it to your notepad. Then open up your paint program and paste. You should see the screen you just took a shot of. Search on Google for "screen shot" if you need instructions for your computer. How To Capture a Screen Shot of your Desktop or the Active Window in Windows is the instructions for Windows for example. On paint there are two columns of icons over on the left. The top icon in the second column resembles a viewfinder. Click on that. You should now be able to click on your label on your screen shot and by dragging your mouse make a dotted line box around just your label. Once you have the label in the box copy (ctrl c) Now open up a second paint and open the picture you want on your desktop screen. Then paste your label on top of the picture. (ctrl v). You should be able to click on the label and drag it where you want it on your picture. Then click outside the box and it should be pasted on top of your other picture. Save the new picture as a jpg. Replace you current picture with this new picture. My desktop is the dashboard of a 2006 Ferrari F430 spider that I took a picture of in Atlanta GA at the Ferrari Dealership. See the picture below to see what mine looks like. If someone finds your laptop your name and phone number is on your screen now. This is no guarantee that you will get it back but it increases the chances that you will.

Too much information! It is enough to have your telephone number on your screen. I can imagine the local low-lives selling the name and address of someone who is so wealthy that they can afford to lose a laptop computer and all its contents!
Yeah... It's a nice idea, but I think I gotta agree with Arthur on this. Anyone reading this with this picture now knows your address and phone number. Do you really want that? All it takes is is one crazy... Oh... You mean that isn't YOUR car? Bummer...

All that information is in the local phone book. Anyone who thinks their information is safe from crazies is living in a false sense of security. If I lose my phone book I don't care if I get it back. I get to look at that car every time I turn on my computer.
I remember some years ago before I retired, I wrote an article about the business that provides a service in which a lost or stolen laptop would report back to a mothership and indicate its whereabouts. It sounds like a good plan, but of course there is a monthly fee. I can't remember any more about it than that, except I entitled the article Laptop Call Home!

That sounds like a good plan.
Very good planning i am doing it right now,But in India,Even if you write full biodata,No one will return your laptop,I hope it wont get lost!!!

I hope so too.
Oh, it would be wonderful if an honest person found it and returned it to you... but I think I'm dreaming.

I have a fault of thinking MOST people are good. If it doesn't come back it won't be because they didn't know where it belonged.
Was this intel possibly inspired by Bill's comments on the versatility of dogs. I had visions of the laptop getting up on four little laptop legs and walking all the way home with a tongue hanging out of its mouth.
I'd just use a plain background and give an email address (I have several) and cell phone number. If I found a computer, I'd contact the person before mailing. I'd like to be reimbursed for postage, but also I'd make sure the person is still at the same address or not traveling somewhere.
