Finger Lakes U-PICK Strawberries

Last summer I had a chance to visit my brother who owns Silver Queen Farm in Trumansburg, NY. My brother grows strawberries, raspberries, sweet corn, peppers, squash, peas, tomatoes, broccoli, cucumbers, pumpkins, Brussel sprouts, melons. People come in droves. Most of what Gordon grows is "U-pick your own". He does make some available at local farmer's markets as well. I was there in strawberry season and whole families come to pick. Gordon has a lot of fun with the little ones. He often checks by asking the kids,"You know the rules? (in his exaggerated stern voice) You have to eat as you pick." The kids and parents giggle as they nod that they understand. You should see some of the kids as they come back to the weigh stand, with faces and clothes covered in strawberry juice. Gordon has more strawberries than anyone I have ever seen. Strawberries come in many varieties and he carries at least ten of them. Because they usually ripen at different times he has a longer picking season. He told me that one family came in and picked 85 pounds of strawberries. Gordon dug a pond on the farm and has an irrigation system which can literally make it rain if the weather doesn't cooperate. Another interesting crop that Gordon grows is rye. Rye is useful for several things. Not only does rye straw make for good strawberry beds it is also desired by racetracks like Saratoga. Rye has the unique feature of being silver rather than the more common golden straw color. My brother has someone come and harvest the rye and has the rye ground for chicken feed. Yes he also has chickens which the children find amusing as well. I don't think it's a coincidence that he is located at the corner of Stillwell Road and Chicken Coop road. |
