How not to use a forklift
By Franklyn Gallup of Mousespace.net
I have worked at both Home Depot and Lowe's in the flooring departments. One of the jobs I did was drive forklifts, reach trucks and electric pallet jacks. These machines are extremely useful and necessary as part of my job. They do require a bit of common sense to be used safely. One of the very important things to understand is the center of gravity in relation to the load. If the center of gravity falls outside the outside wheel it is very likely that the machine will tip over which is dangerous to both the operator and any nearby. While I was working on a job in Raymond, Washington I happened to look across the street to see a forklift that had dumped a whole pallet of sheetrock on the ground while the load was about three feet off the ground. This resulted in the forklift which was the kind that fastens onto the back of tractor trailer flatbed being stuck at a precarious angle. All the workers on the job were standing around wondering how they were going to fix this problem. I on the other hand grabbed my digital camera and took a picture. I knew that someday I would be using it in an article somewhere. |
