How to make sandwich boards for your business
By Franklyn Gallup of WoodFloorist.com
I was recently asked to make some sandwich boards for a non profit organization I belong to called the hour4hourtimeexchange I thought the construction of these signs would make for a great article. I will be including pictures and comments of steps I will be taking as I make them. Sandwich boards come come in basically two styles. One type sits on the sidewalk or along side the road. This is the type I will be describing here. Often times this type of sign is used for real estate sales. The other type is one that a person wears so that the message appears in both the front and back of the person wearing it. You can make such a sign by replacing the hinges with shoulder straps. The Materials You Will Need (1) 4 foot by 8 foot sheet of 15/32" (1/2 inch thick) CDX Plywood (See pictures 1 and 2 below) (48) #10 screws 5/8 inch long to attach the hinges. (See picture 5 below) (6) 6 inch heavy duty strap hinges. (See picture 10 below) Tools you will need Tape measure Pencil Circular Saw Straight edge Screwdriver or electric screwdriver Steps to create (3)sandwich boards Purchase the materials above that you don't already have listed above in the materials needed list. If possible have the place where you purchase the plywood to at least cut it into three sections. Home Depot often offers cuts on their panel saw for free. Measure and cut the sections that are 48 inches by 32 inches in half. Put two sections together and place the hinges on two boards with the swivel section directly over the seam between the two sections. Screw the hinges in place. I screwed one screw in each side of each hinge first and then checked to make sure the hinges were aligned right. I then added all the additional screws. Repeat this process to create the other two sandwich boards. I taped the message on the board with packing tape. You could also paint the boards and paint your message on each side. By having three boards you can place them on several streets to direct them to you location. I made these boards for the hour4hourtiemexchange which is a non-profit organization but you could use these signs for garage sales, business meeting, picnics, houses for sale and many other uses. I created the message on "paint" on my computer. I then enlarged the image 330 percent and saved the picture on my computer. I then loaded it onto a flash drive memory stick. I then took the flash drive to Staples and they printed in 18 x 24 inch paper. They also laminated it for me so that is protected from the weather. I then fastened this message to the board. You can customize your board anyway you want.

1/2 inch CDX plywood is $12.67 per sheet at Home Depot

Have a Home Depot Associate cut the plywood into 3 sections, 32 inches wide.

The 3 equal pieces made from the 4x8 sheet of plywood

6 inch heavy duty strap hinges are $3.97 each

You will need 48 screws to attach the hinges. I used #10 screws 5/8 inch long.

Measure and mark 24 inches on each panel.

Use a straight edge and connect the two measurements

Cut along the pencil line on the plywood

You will end up with 6 sections that are 24 inches by 32 inches

With the best side down but two sections together on the 24 inch edge and screw the hinges on.

This is how the sandwich board should look.

This will produce three sandwich boards

I taped my laminated message onto the board with packing tape

Finished sign

I might write an Intel about making sandwich boards with whole wheat bread, turkey, lettuce and tomatoes.
Very helpful. Thanks. I will try this out for a few signs here. The pictures are very helpful as usual.

It is pretty easy and I have tried to make it so there is no waste.
