How to mix paint colors

By Franklyn Gallup of WoodFloorist.com

One of the things I learned is how to make colors while learning to paint game lines on gym floors.

Often it was desirable to make a light blue or light green for example. This is often the case when you have lots of different games on the same floor with each one needing to be a different color.

Let's just say we have red, green, blue and black paint but we need seven different colors. Rather than buying three more colors we need only a gallon of white paint.

If you take the green paint and add white to it you will never get light green before Christmas. You need to add a little bit of green to the white paint. By dividing the white paint into three different containers we can add a little bit of green to one, a little bit of blue to another and a little bit of red to the third. You will find that the white changes color very quickly with just a little of the other color.

Because we need so little paint to change the color we still have enough red, green, blue and black to paint those colors and have light red, light green, and light blue to paint some of the less important games for example badminton courts.

Badminton courts are used so infrequently on gym floors that they are there for just the occasional use they do get. A light pastel color works well for this.

You can use this information in other ways too. If you want to paint the shutters just a shade lighter than the siding on your house just add the siding color to white until the desired color. If you want the shutters darker just add a little black to the siding color.

This can be used for interior design as well.
