I was standing in a circle of wood

By Franklyn Gallup of WoodFloorist.com

One of my most challenging jobs I have ever done was creating a 10 foot circle of wood in the entryway of a condominium on Connecticut Ave. in NE Washington D.C. This is a very expensive housing area in Washington D.C.

The architect originally suggested making this 10 foot circle made out of custom cut marble. When they got a price for making a custom cut 10 foot circle they changed the plans to making the circle out of wood.

The reason for the circle was a problem when they removed a pie shaped closet to open up the space. The solid 3/4 inch parquet flooring went in different directions on each side of the closet. To visually make this transition of the different directions the circle idea was proposed.

The contractor who had the contract for renovating the entire condominium had me come in and give him a bid for making the circle, doing other repairs and sanding and finishing the entire condominium.

I had no idea how to price such a unique job so I gave it my best quessimate. As fate would have it I beat the next bid by $100 and got the job.

I designed a compass out of some wood, a piece of pipe for the center and some shelving brackets to attach to my router. After making a 10 foot diameter cut out of the wood I removed all the parquet which didn't match up with the parquet in the front of the front door.

I then made the new parquet flooring out of quarter sawn white oak to match the existing floor and then started making the 45 concentric rings to make the circle. Each band was 1/4 inch wide by 3/4 inches high. It was about 30 feet around for each band. I cut all these strips in my back yard on my table saw.

Once the floor was completely installed I stained the parquet dark brown and the foot wide band was left natural.

They then designed walls to match the circle and put a dome over top of it supported by five pillars which sat on the band itself. The dome had indirect lighting to create an very nice effect.

I remember standing in the middle of the circle on January 28, 1986 when I was halfway through creating the circle when I received the news. The Challenger had exploded.

Where were you when you received that news?

Contributor's Note

I took these pictures originally with my 35 mm camera. I have taken pictures of the pictures with my digital camera which accounts for some of the glare which I did my best to eliminate.

Such a nice trick ending. I love the photos, too. Where was I? Probably reading about it in the newspaper the next morning.

I never seem to remember these sepulchral moments - but I sure remember where I was on pivotal days in my life.

I saw it live and in color on TV. Unbelievable. Numbing.

Nice job on the floor, by the way.

Being on a construction site my first reaction was , "Yeah right!". Often people on job sites pull your leg any chance they get so it took a while for me to realize it actually happened.

Great intel, Franklyn. Tough job to bid and even tougher to complete.
I was watching on TV, breath taking to say the least. Completely heartwrenching!
Thank you for helping us old folks with the memories.
Best wishes.
