In Search of the Perfect Christmas Tree
By Franklyn Gallup of FriendlyBank.net
I was only 6 when my mother bundled me up for the first time to go hunting for the perfect Christmas tree with my dad. I had a snow suit that made me feel like that kid on the movie "The Christmas Story". You know the one where the kid gets a bb gun and hits himself in the glasses the first time out. I couldn't put my arms down either. Mittens, scarf, snow boots and the works. Living on a 300 acre dairy farm we had lots of trees to choose from. The woods were about 3/4 of a mile from the house which is about 70 miles or so when you are 6 years old especially in 2 feet of snow. Going with dad at that age was like going out with Paul Bunyan. I felt such a pride that I would be allowed for this very important mission. Christmas trees at my house for many years had to be Scotch Pine. I don't know why but that seemed to be the rule. It was an OK rule since we had lots of them on our farm. I remember dad asking me for my opinion on several trees before we selected just the right one. Some had bare spots, some were too tall, some were too small. One had a bird's nest which definitely ruled it out. Destroying someone's home was just not in the Christmas spirit. Once the selection was made he had me stand back. I watched with interest as dad cut the tree down with an axe. I didn't know you could use a saw for some years later. It just wasn't done at least in my opinion at the time. The rule was you had to cut it with an axe. Dad let me help him drag it back to the house or let's just say he let me think I was helping. I remember thinking how impressed mom would be to see this beautiful tree, the perfect Christmas tree.
