Making it Fun makes Learning Easy
By Franklyn Gallup of WoodFloorist.com
As I was going to do an estimate I saw a large pile of large diameter water pipe stacked by the road. The bright turquoise color caught my eye and I planned to stop and take some pictures on my way home. I have added some of those pictures below. As I was taking these abstract pictures I noticed a sign nearby which read: TUTORING HELPS-- Sign Up Today! The Freeman Center TUTORING & EDUCATIONAL ENRICHMENT Serving local students since 1970 I thought that would be interesting so I went and checked it out. I found out the center was started by Steve Freeman who I talked to. I explained what I was doing and he gave me a tour of the facilities while he explained the mission of the center. Steve Freeman had been a teacher for 30 years. He has developed innovative programs to help students improve their basic skills and often changing their attitudes about school in the process. Every student gets a customized program to help them where they need help. I asked for permission to take pictures for my article and he said that would be OK. I have added some of them below. There are many things to peak a students interest. I was thinking how great it would have been to have such a place as I was struggling through school. Steve gave me a brochure and I found one of the concepts in the Philosophy of the Center very interesting. It is summed up in two words.... "Teachable Moments". The concept is listen for questions which show that the student lacks an understanding in something. The idea is to use that moment and use it as a teachable moment and make the learning fun at the point when the student shows interest. This is not possible with a classroom of 25 or more students where such learning opportunities "fall through the cracks". This creates interest in the student and creates a atmosphere where learning can advance at a faster pace. The Freeman Center works with students who are struggling in school and those that are currently doing well and want to excel. The center has worked with students from age 5 to age 54. Steve uses a lot of information and tangible objects that connect with Ripley's Believe It or Not to pique kids interest. Getting kids interested is an important key in the learning process. The Freeman Center is located at 1020 West 1st Street in Centralia, WA. For more information check out their website.

Hi Franklyn, that was an interesting article about the Freeman Center, which you shared with us. I remember the International Waldorf School scheme known for having fun ways of learning. Waldorf Schools are globally successful. Waldorf also emphasizes smaller groups and similar ways employed by Freeman. Unfortunately, institutions like that one which are also much into art and emotional learning, are not cheap. You will certainly like a webpage which I wrote about a more specialized learning subject. The topic is listed well for its keyword in Google, but then you wouldn't know which one on the first page is mine. Just google "best way to learn Spanish is with music and text", to get it. You will see why my way for learning languages is so much fun.

I am very familiar with the Waldorf Concept of learning. I refinished the floors in one of their schools. I think you meant to search for Best way to learn Spanish is starting with music and text. I like some of your creative ideas. Tenerife on the web page helped me figure out it was yours. I thought joining a church was a great idea for learning a new language. Singing songs is both upbeat and repetitive. I was learning some Hebrew from visiting a Messianic Jewish congregation. They sang the same song in both Hebrew and English to help make the connection and meaning.
Just wondering if it is hard to learn Hebrew. There are many Hebrew words which were germanized, where I come from. The learning of words can become culture, indeed.

I think like any language it is hearing it spoken, reading it out loud and speaking it. They had a screen projector so it was possible to read as the words were sung. Hebrew is a beautiful spiritual language. You might find my Intel How a Sefer Torah scroll is made interesting. I had a Jewish Rabbi look over the Intel after I had published it and he said it was accurate.
Thank you for sharing, interesting article. Tutoring is quite common in Asia but one doesn't hear about it much in US culture.

I agree. In the US it is not so common which is why I thought it would make an interesting Intel. Thanks for the visit and comment. I wish more people would leave comments on Qondio.
Hey Franklin; can you replicate this last picture on my floor?

Sure I can. I will have to sharpen my compass.
My daughter teaches in the Behtel(sp) School district Spanaway, WA.,to high students that are on their way out of the system if they don't graduate.Using techniques that interest a student is the most positive way to introduce new concepts.

It is sad to see how the public school system is not meeting the needs of the students in education.
