Maytown Safety Rest Area - Adventure with Photography
By Franklyn Gallup of AddFranklyn.com
One of the things I like to do is take some time out and sit with my digital camera and take pictures at the rest areas off the Interstate. This has some interesting results sometimes. I never know what kind of picture is coming to me on the back of a tractor trailer or on the side of a motor home. I look for things are generic and not trade marks. The rest area also has a nice walk area for some interesting pictures along the dirt path through the lush vegetation. I took about 80 pictures on my last visit. Not only is this relaxing but it is good to stimulate ideas for writing. There are lots of nice flowering bushes and trap doors to all kids of places. I find it is good photography practice as well. Maytown Safety Rest Area is on southbound I-5 in Washington State between Olympia, WA and Centralia, WA. Most of the time they have a non profit organization manning the coffee and cookie booth. Washington State is very focused on keeping drivers alert and many visitors appreciate the free coffee and cookies. They usually have a place for donations for the organization working the booth. Lions Clubs, Elk Clubs, Churches, Boy Scouts, and even My Computer Group are the types of organizations catering to traveling motorists. This stop has lots of rest room facilities for both people and pets. I fit as many pictures in as I could. Let me know which one is your favorite. |

We have lots of ferns in Washington

Very good job, great pictures. I love the flowers along the paths. I love places like this, too.

This is a very peaceful place. It's also fun to see the "surprise" that sometimes comes in on a tractor trailer which makes for a good picture.
On two of your pictures... Were they pictures of paintings, or did you digitally "enhance" the pics to make them look like paintings?
CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY
I have no idea what happened to those two pictures. They look normal on my computer but pixelated all by themselves on the Intel. That's weird.
Nice photos. I love the flower one.
CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY
Thanks. Flowers are always great subjects for pictures.
No... See... Ya should have said that these two were watercolors that you (hurriedly) did on the spot...
CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY
I could have said that. If I wanted to make a Intel about painting with watercolors or enhancing pictures with Photoshop. Or if I was worried about someone's opinion of my photography skills. The secret to being a great photographer is to not hide your mistakes but to learn from them. To push the envelope and master the potential of the camera. I uploaded those two pictures to my host and made them into a webpage. Click here to see them Let me know if the appear pixelated. They look fine to me. It appears the pictures got scrambled in the uploading process. If you click on either of the pictures on the webpage I created you will return to this Intel.
The photo I like best is the Rhododendron. We have been down the I-5 many times. Next time we go, I'll be sure to look for that rest area. ;)

It is near mile marker 93. Remember to bring your camera.
Beautiful green get-away... a writer's inspiration for sure. I love you images, so peaceful.

Here are some pictures I took while I was working with my computer group at the rest area. OMUG
I like doing this on trips too, and have posted some of my rest area photos and freeway photos on my blog. Flowers photographed along the way are very much fun.
