Montana Team takes First Place in Canadian Hockey tournament

If you want to see some exciting ice hockey I would recommend finding a Midgets hockey game. These are often Free. The seats are awesome and Midgets hockey is 11th and 12 graders. They are not playing for a paycheck but because they LOVE Ice hockey. Sometimes I think they are more interesting than NHL games. They are often very aggressive hockey One season while my son was playing Midget hockey in Billings, MT his team was invited to play in a AAA Canadian Midgets tournament. Just before they were to go to Canada they had a game with a lot of penalties. Many of the players were not allowed to play in the next two games. This meant that they were going to Canada with only 9 players. They were competing with Canadian teams with 18-20 players. The coach decided they were at a definite disadvantage. He taught them an technique called the zone trap. The idea is that every player on my son's team was a defense man. No one played as a forward. My son's team was at center ice. When the Canadians brought the puck out from their end of the ice the player with the puck had to deal with two defense men. If he passed it that player had two defense men guarding him. The idea was to take the puck away and slap shot it at the goalie. This means the Canadians where skating to bring it out again and again and again while my son's team was skating very little and just taking the puck away and slap shot it back in. The Canadians had never seen anyone play hockey this way and were a little surprised when this little 9 player team from Montana came up and took First Place on their ice in their tournament. They didn't see any humor in that at all My son's coach came into the locker room and told the team that he hopes they never ever get chewed out like the coach was chewing out the Canadian team. |
