My first gun was a Savage 22-410 over/under
By Franklyn Gallup of HarleyMinistries.com
My very first real gun was a Savage 22-410 over and under. I say "real gun" as I am not counting my BB gun as a "real gun". This gun is no longer made and that's a pity. It has a 22 barrel for use as a rifle mounted over a 410 shotgun barrel for use as a beginner shot gun. Since we lived on a 300 acre farm when I was growing up, I had plenty of time and space to pursue searching for rabbits and pheasants. I soon found out the 410 shotgun was almost useless for woodchucks. They have a pretty tough hide. I would eliminate some of them with my 22 and this helped the farm as they made holes everywhere. The shotgun came in pretty handy for rabbits and pheasants though. I can't remember every every actually getting either a rabbit of pheasant but it was a learning experience just the same. I never was interested in hunting big game and the little gun seemed to satisfy my interest in the activity. I haven't been hunting since I left the farm and really have no interest in it anymore. I sold the gun when I was short on funds one year. What are some of your first hunting experiences? |

What a cool story when I was a kid my uncle had a farm and I spent a lot of time there. My cousins and I would go out with the 410 and shot magpies. The magpies would pick at the fruit so no one like them. I remember picking the fruit and then go up down the streets in town selling it to the neighbors and oh yeah driving the 50 chevy truck I don't think I could ever forget that. Thanks for the story. The smell of gunpowder when I used the 410 was like no other smell. I'll bet the 410 did a number on magpies. We had cow pies on our farm but I didn't shoot at them.
The only things I ever hunted were bargain shoes and a husband.

Hi Franklyn, Great Intel. My first gun was a single shot .22 rifle I got from my dad. I used to sit on an old box in the back yard looking across the creek into the duck pen. Rats would come out of the bush, scamper across a small open space and eat the mash we had in an open pan beside the duck pond. The distance was about 50 feet. After watching the rat for several trips, I got to know which route it was taking and its speed. I would then line up the .22 with the path, wait for the rat to show and knock it off as it ran across the open space. I was about 10 years old at the time and got so that I hit the rats 9 times out of 10. By the time I was 12, I had a hunting licence to shoot deer and grouse and every weekend from September to November I would go out hunting with dad. We could get 3 deer each with our licences, and that provided most of the meat for our family as we rented a locker in a refrigeration plant connected to the grocery store that delivered our groceries. I only hunted once after joining the RCMP, and I bagged a large buck. My kids were really upset about my shooting "Bambi" and I never went hunting again. Gave all my guns, except my police service revolver, away to friends who still enjoyed hunting. gilbertg

I never did have an interest in hunting for deer. I used to love watching them leap the fences in the field in front of house. They could clear a 5 foot fence as if it wasn't even there. Magnificent animals who wouldn't anyone.
Wonderful story and beautiful photo of open land. I use an air powered pellet rifle to shoot pesky squirrels and gophers on my ranch! :)

That was an aerial photograph of where I grew up and was taken about 1957-8. Notice the huge garden to the right of the garage. We grew most of our own food and had hogs, cows, chickens and sheep. Those pellet guns can be pretty effective too.
Really appreciate the photo to match the story. Gives you a sense of freedom watching it.
I was allowed to shoot a rifle when I was about 10 and it was a real thrill, but I still remember the "kick." My first gun was a 22LR Smith and Wesson revolver outfitted with snake shot to use for self defense in Mohave Green rattlesnake country. Of course, the best defense against those snakes is to rake the sand in a circle around one's dwelling and keep a sharp eye out all the time, lol. I saw a woodchuck somewhere on my recent trip back to California from the East Coast. I squealed with delight, as I had not seen one of the varmints in years, plus it was not my woodpile he was eyeing!
