My job as a guide at Secret Caverns

By Franklyn Gallup of woodfloorist.com

One of the first jobs I had was a a guide at Secret Caverns. I would walk to work which was about a four mile walk each way.

Being a guide in a caverns was good for me as it was very much like public speaking except that I knew that most of the people I was talking to I had never met before and most I would never see again. This made it OK to mess up occasionally and it was OK. This also made it OK to push my comfort zone as well.

Working as a Cavern guide is a great confidence builder.

Secret Caverns was a privately owned business when I worked there. It was nothing fancy and not really commercialized.

A few places the wall had to be widened and a concrete stairway was put in. Basically they tried to leave it as much like it was found by the original cave explorers. The bottom part was poured with a concrete sidewalk and railings where added where necessary.

Lights were also installed.

I was a place to be a little corny and make it fun for the visitors. I remember on spot where I always added to watch your head as you go under this low part here. I've hit my head here many times and you can see what it's done to me.

Parents grabbed their children to make sure they didn't become like me. (grin) Best of all no one hit their head.

Secret Caverns is near Cobleskill, New York. It is also close to the more well known Howe Caverns.

I used to love it when a bus would come in and no one understood English. How do you say, "Be quiet" or anything else in Japanese? It was total chaos and fun.

A few times I would have to have a group wait while I helped someone back out who became claustrophobic.

There is a 100 foot waterfall at the end of the tour where we turned around. They often had one group coming out and another coming in so we would meet somewhere. Make for a little excitement getting by each other in the small space.

My favorite part was total darkness. This was basically where I turned off all the lights in our section. Being outside at night usually includes starlight, moonlight, or house lights. It would cause spots before your eyes while you adjusted to it.

Because Secret Caverns was a privately owned business most of the billboards were hand-painted and got very creative.

If you are looking for a fun job I would recommend considering a job as a cavern guide.
