Problems getting a home improvement loan

By Franklyn Gallup of FriendlyBank.net

Many of my customers are having problems getting home improvement loans to pay for improvements to their homes like installing wood floors or refinishing existing wood floors.

I notice a lot of commercials now on TV which are offering 70% discount on wood floor prices with no payments or interest for 36 months.

The real problem is it isn't just one company doing it. I think what they are doing is they are getting rid of inventory at ridiculous prices and keeping their installers busy until the economy picks up again.

It's hard for a one man business to compete with that.

I went to the local carpenters union to see if perhaps I could get some work as a member of the union.

Surprisingly I was told that I had a better chance of getting work by not being a member. The lady in the office told me they have journeymen carpenters that aren't working because their just isn't any work. She also told me this is the worst she has ever seen it.

Part of the problem is that values of real estate have dropped dramatically and many homeowners are finding that they owe more than their house is worth.

This creates a situation where there is no equity to borrow against.

Right now I am taking any work I can find just to survive until the economy picks up again.

I would like any suggestions as to how you are surviving this recession that I could use.

How am I surviving the recession?

Bluntly - I am not.

My responsibilities to my dogs and my family coupled with a total inability to go out to work, where I could probably earn a reasonable wage, mean that I am literally living from hand to mouth. I work all the hours I can at home but this is only compounding the problem with my eyes.
Never mind - as long as our governments can squander our tax money fighting in areas from which they hope to turn a profit and as long as they can dump our money into the troughs from which the arms dealers and financial bandits only withdraw their snouts to breathe, we, the people will continue to be exploited.
I hope you have your name on the list to buy the latest WMD that is being produced - why on Earth would you prefer food and medical care to a bloody great big boys' toy that goes BANG?

Okay... A lot of us are in a similar boat here. But I think it is important to think positively and not negatively (as easy as that is). Take a step back, take a deep breath, and ignore it for a day or two. Sometimes we can be so close to a problem that we cannot see the possible solutions. Every time that God closes a door, he opens a window.

There's this story from the movie "Working Girl":

A truck got stuck in an underpass because it was over the height limit. All attempts to dislodge the vehicle were in vain. Finally, a passerby suggested letting the air out of the tires to lower the height of the vehicle. This was done. It worked.

The point is that you never know from where (or from whom) a good idea will come from.

I have always lived very frugally, even during the so-called good times, so personally there is not much difference.

I read that a lot of people are starting victory gardens, though.

Victory gardens are always a good idea even in good times.
