Proud to be a Redneck

By Franklyn Gallup of I Teach Wood Floors

I grew up on a 300 acre dairy farm in upstate New York. I remember summer vacation meant Haying season was about to commence.

I remember standing on a hay wagon working with Ma unloading hay onto the elevator. It was hot and I was struggling with the bales which were actually bigger than I was. The twine on the bales had caused big painful water blisters on my hands.

I started to complain to Ma about it and she said,"Blisters don't count unless you earn them". I worked even harder after that.

I remember dad plowing the garden with the full size tractor and the three bottom plow. He had been running the manure spreader over that piece the winter before and now it all got plowed in for some really potent soil.

I never did understand why Ma planted all the weeds but we grew all our food on that one acre garden.

Things didn't git any different as I grew up. I remember one of my first cars was an old Studebaker. I broke the key off in the ignition. Rather than buy a new ignition switch which probably would have cost more than the car was worth I simply cut the wires and wired in a house light switch and a door bell button for the starter.

No....actually my very first cars never made it on the highway. My brother rolled it down in the back field on the "racetrack"

I have made peanut butter sandwiches using a paint stir stick for 5 gallon buckets as the knife. It works just fine.

I use a napkin and electric tape if I cut my finger and think nothing strange about it

Yep...Being a redneck is just fine with me.

Great picture. If being a redneck means being as creative as you are, then I'd love to be a redneck.
