So you want to write a novel?
By Franklyn Gallup of BibleFree.org
I am married to a bestselling romance writer. Her pen name is Adrianna Dane. A search on Google will show you she is well known and extremely popular. I would like to share with you some tips on writing a bestselling novel. The first tip is collecting reference materials. Many people assume that a successful writer just sits down and writes. This is rarely the case. My wife collects resources for ideas every chance she gets. When she goes to Goodwill she usually walks out with 20 to 30 books. She looks for books that are over sized with lots of pictures. Looking at pictures helps when you are writing descriptions of places. She also looks for books that relate to the topics of not only the book she is writing but for the next four books she will be writing. She currently has over 80 books in the marketplace. Another resource she uses is magazines. Since she is writing romance she subscribes to gay magazines. This may seem odd at first but gay magazines have pictures of the best dressed, sexiest men on the planet. She picks out a picture of the hero and other men in the romance novel and creates a complete biography for each character. This adds a lot of depth to her characters. The next tip is finding a publisher. She uses ebook and Print on demand publishers. Many people don't realize it but traditional publishers are going out of business at an alarming rate. The main reason for this it that traditional publishers print large printings. For example, if a publisher prints 100,000 copies of a book and only 70,000 copies actually sell they often have to buy back the 30,000 unsold copies. This is very costly and wasteful. It also fills our landfills. Many people don't know that the New York Times bestsellers list is based on the 100,000 the book stores bought and not on the 70,000 that actually sold. Ebooks on the other hand are electronically formatted. You buy rights to download a file and print out the book or read it online. Not only does this save tons of paper but saves on shipping costs as well. Books of this type reach a global marketplace at a fraction of the cost. Ebooks are the future for many books so you would be well advised to consider them. They also have a much longer "shelf life". The other format to consider is Print on Demand. The technology exists today that when you order a book they print and bind 1 book. If you order 5 they print 5 and ship it off to you. This is very financially and ecologically smart. So in conclusion, collecting reference materials and finding a publisher who uses the format of the very near future are two of the most important things in writing a successful novel. |

Fascinating. I've written about ten novels but have not considered ebook publishing... I'm still trying for that hard cover! Congratulations to your wife. You didn't mention whether the ebook route was profitable or what I could expect by publishing that way. I'd really like to know.

The ebook route is actually very profitable. First off, onlike hardcover or softcover books there is no limit to shelf life. She is still getting sales on her very first ebook. Secondly, it is ecologically sound as there are no unsold books to dispose of. Thirdly, ebooks are available on a global marketplace. My wife has fans around the globe as there is no shipping and handling logistics problems. Fourthly, with the popularity of palm pilots, laptops and advances in phone technologies books in electronic format reach an ever increasing readership in spite of the resistance of the hard and soft cover publishers. The fifth thing is that ebook publishers are willing to consider new authors as the risk in committing paper, bindings, storage and shipping is not there.
I would love to write a novel, but so far I haven't managed to come up with a decent scenario. One day...

My wife was writing in ebook format before ebooks were cool. Now you see Kindle, Nook, Kobo, Sony, and iPads.
