The 950 dollar violin

By Franklyn Gallup of ComputerHealthPlan.net

We had just moved to Billings, Montana. We had driven 2000 miles from Upstate New York to relocate there.

We knew no one and were starting over from scratch. No one in our immediate family had ever been west of the Mississippi and here we were moving to a place we had never seen.

The day after we had finished the four day drive cross country my son had to start school. It must have been a little scary but he seemed to adapt rather quickly.

He was very ambitious. He was doing high school football, travel ice hockey and orchestra in his sophomore year. Often these activities would overlap.

I remember that high school football try-outs and Ice hockey try-outs were in the same week. He got as little tired that week.

One day he came home to tell me that the orchestra leader had told him that although use of the school violin was free he still had to have a signed rental agreement signed by his parents. Apparently, with all the activities he had going on he had apparently overlooked this. It was the first I had heard of it.

He was told if he showed up for orchestra without the signed rental agreement again he would be sent to the office.

As luck would have it I had just been paid for a job so we made a trip to the local music store.

The salesman at the music store showed us some modestly priced average violins. I said, "Is that the best violins you have?"

He hesitated and thought for a minute and showed us a $950.00 violin. I let my son hold it and he had a big smile on his face. We had him also install fine tuning attachments.

The next time he showed up for orchestra he handed the orchestra leader the school violin and said, "No thanks, I have my own."

His violin was now the second best violin in the orchestra and I think it helped boost his self esteem.

Personally, I think it was some of the best money I have ever spent.
