The Battle Hymn of the Democracy?
By Franklyn Gallup of NationalDiscountHealth.net
The Battle Hymn of the Democracy? Wait a minute.... that's not right. The song is named the "The Battle Hymn of the Republic". Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord... (We won't go into the Political Incorrectness of this song... I am not very much into political correctness anyway) Hmmmm What IS the difference between a republic and a democracy? Why do we say in the Pledge of Allegiance that we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands... There's that word Republic again.... The thing to understand is that the United States is NOT a Democracy but a Republic. A Democracy is simply a government where the majority makes all the decisions ...Period. There is no protection of minorities at all. There simply is no constitution or set of rules to protect anyone who is not part of the majority. There are lots of people who try to make people think we live in a Democracy but it just isn't true and you should be thankful for it. As soon as the United States had a Constitution it became a Republic. Benjamin Franklin was very wise and explains it this way: Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote. The U S Constitution is what the lamb is armed with. Democracy is great if you are one of the wolves but not so great if you are the lamb or any other minority. The next time you hear someone say that something is unconstitutional just think to yourself ... that protection is there because we live in a Republic and not a Democracy. |

I love the Franklin quote. Nice job on defining the difference.

I was listening to the news tonight and John McCain was talking and he mentioned Democracy and then corrected himself and said technically we live in a republic. My wife said, "Maybe he read your Intel" I said, "Actually, I think he knows the difference."
Very interesting that you feel that a republic is where you live. A fact that astonishes the rest of the world is that the USA is in thrall (and massive debt) to the Federal Reserve which is an unaudited private company that seems to answer to no-one yet controls the issue of cash tokens. It would seem that your two similitudes miss out a third and more apt one. The one about crumbs from the rich man's table? With the control of fiscal policy in the iron fist of a small private company aren't you more in a dictatorship than a democracy?
The wolves and the lamb -- what a wonderful analogy.
Yes, and the problem is that too many of our citizens have absolutely no idea that what you say is true. However, in our pledge of Allegiance it is not written "the democracy for which it stands" so it is hard for me to understand how people can be so oblivious to the fact that our form of government is as you say, a republic.

If we did live in a true Democracy the last words of the pledge of Allegiance could very well be, "with liberty and justice for the majority." I cringe when in the health care debacle I hear politicians talking about a simple majority while they are trying to trash the Constitution with mandated health care insurance.
Thank you for sharing this piece of history, Franklyn. It's amazing that our forefathers covered so many situation to protect our freedoms. Best to you. Frederick

Benjamin Franklin had great foresight. One of his quotes is : When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic. Does that sound like the shenanigans that are going on in Washington D.C. right now ??
