The Prayer Rock
By Franklyn Gallup of BibleFree.org
I grew up as a Lutheran. I went to Sunday School every Sunday and reading the Bible was a major part of Sunday School. I met my wife in front of the ladies room at the Warnerville Skating rink. The skating rink was a place that had been a meeting place for our parents as well. When my wife went home that first night her mother was half asleep. My wife told her she had met this nice guy at the skating rink and his name was Frank Gallup. She says her mother was instantly wide awake as my father had the same name and her mother had gone to school with my father. Her first question was how old was he? Imagine her relief when she found out my father wasn't chasing after 14 year olds. We went together for 3 years before we got married. She was raised Catholic. She wanted to have a High Mass but since I wasn't Catholic we had to meet with the priest. I asked some hard questions and much to my surprise the priest told me it wasn't worth the effort to convert me. He did say that if I agreed to raise the children when they came as Catholics we could still have a High Mass Wedding which is what we did. I was always asking what the kids what they learned at religious instruction when they came home. Usually they said "nothing". I was little disappointed with this answer but kept my silence. On one occasion they came home with the interesting lesson about the prayer rock. As I understood it they were to take a rock and place it on the floor when they went to bed so they would stub their toe when they got up and remember to pray. They were then supposed to place the rock on the pillow so when the hit their head on the rock they would again remember to pray. I marveled at the possibility of a lawsuit against the church if a child ended up with a concussion for a broken foot. Needless to say my children didn't use a prayer rock. I am still looking for some Scripture for the prayer rock |

Unusual custom. Surely there are better ways to remind children to pray
CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY
I would think reminding them by being an example would be much better way to remind them.
Very Interesting, Frank. I too have never heard of a prayer rock but it does lead to interesting theories as to where the idea came from. My father was Catholic, my mother Anglican.
The prayer rock is not in Scriptures; it's just someone's "via" to get kids to pray. What's the good in the prayer - or lack of it when forgotten - if there is no understanding, understanding enough to remember why one should pray? I was raised Catholic and one day late in my high school years was praying to the Virgin Mary...until I looked at it for what was really there: only a statue. No one was there but me. That day I realized that my own spirituality was up to me and to my personal concept of God. This has given me a better understanding of personal responsibility toward others and toward others' beliefs. Religious beliefs are very personal to each of us.
Very interesting story, Franklyn. Thank you for sharing. Best wishes. Frederick
Anything that helps you to remember something else is not a bad idea BUT - would you really remember to put a rock on your pillow so that you would hurt yourself when you went to bed? Whichever god you pray to, if your relationship is so shallow that you needed to be reminded to pray, why would you bother?

I suggested that I would Love to sit in on some of these religious instruction classes and my wife got all flustered and panicked. I think that told me more than anything. Did you check out some of the external links? Some of them are pretty funny. I would agree that a relationship that needs a rock to remember is shallow indeed.
Frank, you won't find it in scripture. As a Christian, I'm amazed at some of the goings on from both Catholics and Protestants -- truly amazed. Regards, Jim

I stopped being amazed some time ago. I understand that everything under the sun is vanity. If you look you will find vanity in just about everything people do. Ecclesiastes Chapter 3 tells a lot about my current perspective. I live more as an observer than a critic. I learn from my mistakes as well as the mistakes of others and just try to do a little better myself each day.
