There are no stupid questions
By Franklyn Gallup of I Teach Wood Floors
I grew up on a 300 acre dairy farm in upstate New York. Hard work was something I learned early in life. One day when I was 8 years old I asked my mother why don't they just make milk out of flour and water. In retrospect, I realize this was kinda of a silly question but at the time it seemed that there just had to be an easier way to make milk than making hay, milking cows and cleaning up after them. Instead of my mother saying,"That's stupid!" she said in her infinite wisdom, "Let's try it and see". Obviously, drinking flour and water couldn't possibly hurt me. It was a much better answer than that's stupid. I not only learned that flour and water don't make milk but also learned a very effective way to respond to questions. I now have twin sons who are 28 and daughter who is 31. I have had lots of opportunity to listen and apply this skill. In ninth grade science I remember the first thing the teacher said on the very first day. I don't remember much else about ninth grade science except this first. He said,"This is ninth grade science. You are going to ask questions and some of them I will not know the answer to. In this class I DON'T KNOW is a perfectly acceptable answer." Here was a teacher who admitted there were things he didn't know. As simple as that sounds it amazes me how many people can't say those words. If they don't know something they will make something up rather than admit that. Both of these concepts have helped me in raising children and also in teaching people how to install and refinish wood floors |

What a wise mother you had and what a wise man you've grown up to be. I can see why you're such a patient teacher. You really grew up in the middle of the proverbial "nowhere," didn't you?
CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY
It didn't seem like nowhere at the time. It was all there was and I think I was better off being satisfied with that.
