They shoot horseshoes don't they?

Let me say right up front that I don't even own a horse. That fact didn't seem to matter the other day when I went to Walmart's and bought a set of horseshoes. The first thing I noticed is that they were made in China. I am not sure that matters because I don't have a Chinese horse either. In August I will be turning 60 and I am beginning to realize how important it is to stay limber. I had been noticing as I was taking my dog Marley for walks in the park that there are some very nice horseshoe pits that no one seems to use. I thought throwing horseshoes would be a great way to stay limber. Today I tried them out as I was taking Marley for a walk. Since there are two sets of horseshoe pits, I put Marley's leash around the stake on one set and played on the other. Marley didn't know what to make of the sound of steel hitting steel. She ended up hiding behind the barrier and peeking around looking on to try and figure out what the heck I was doing. I usually have preference for throwing right handed. I thought about that for a few sets and decided to try throwing left handed. That seemed awkward at first and the shoes weren't even close to the mark but as I tried it a few times I got better. I found this to be a great exercise as I threw all four horseshoes and then walked over, bend down and picked them up and then walked back and threw them again. By throwing in just one direction I was getting good exercise and didn't have to worry about a stray shoe hitting Marley. I got my wife to go to the park today with me and of course Marley had to come along. She took some pictures of me pitching horseshoes. I was finding it a little difficult to pitch my horseshoes and take pictures of me doing it at the same time. There were a couple of guys watching as my wife and I were doing the pictures. They asked if I was giving up so easily. I explained that I had convinced the boss to take some pictures for an article I was doing. They smiled and said that they also pitched horseshoes. So for competition and recreation they don't shoot horseshoes they pitch them. (usually without the horse being attached) A Farrier is someone who shoes horses with horseshoes. He doesn't shoot horses or horseshoes either. A farrier trims and cleans a horse's hooves and puts horseshoes on their feet. My father worked as a farrier while going to high school. So to answer the question in the title they, whoever they are, they don't shoot horseshoes.

Not knowing about the game of horshoe throwing. I assumed somebody was not feeling too well.
I know I have felt that way on occasion.
Glad to hear your condition is not terminal and that you will never worry about horshehoes again. Unless, that is, they are on the end of a real horse.

I have heard that getting older is eventually terminal. Perhaps I should take up flying where terminal is a good thing.
Great stuff. I do agree that it is a good way of staying physically and mentally sharp. Careful you don't get obsessed though. My uncle is about your age and spends all his time playing boule aka petanque, which I believe is pretty much the same as pitching horseshoes except that, being French, they use balls instead of horseshoes (crazy people). He is totally obsessed and it's all he ever talks about.

Those French always did like to play with .... They always liked to play. As you can tell by my Intels it's not all I talk about.
That's a good idea to pitch horse shoes with either arm. And the weight of the horse shoes gives you a good workout. Maybe I'll buy some - I have weak arm muscles. Occasionally, I try to use my computer mouse with my left hand to keep my right arm and shoulder from getting sore and to practice left handed coordination.

The trick I found with pitching left handed was to figure out which foot to move first. I studied what my feet were doing naturally throwing right handed and then switched which foot went first. The nice think I like about this is after I bought the horseshoes the exercise was free. They also have wooden and steel outside exercise equipment in this park so I can get a total workout and workout the dog at he same time on the .4 mile walking track.
Reminds me of back in the day where Jane Fonda acted in a movie,"They Shoot Horses Don't They?"circa. 1969.I need to consider that as a possible way to exercise.
