Tips on Taking Pictures of Seagulls
By Franklyn Gallup of WoodFloorist.com
First off I have found taking pictures of seagulls in flight a lot like Mr Miyagi trying to catch a fly in flight with chopsticks. It requires a lot of patience and a willingness to accept that there will a lot of pictures of empty sky. These are some tips I found while trying to take pictures at the Fort Borst Lake today. Take lots of pictures. Out of the 164 pictures I took today I found only about 10 that I am happy with. Fortunately with digital photography you don't have to pay for the blurred, out of focus, pieces of seagull shots or those that were a complete miss. Shoot at arms length By holding the camera away from you, you can see the whole area. Then when you see a possible shot just aim the camera and shoot in the general direction. By looking through the viewfinder you can miss a lot of potential shots. Pick a good day Obviously, you don't want to pick a day when it's raining. A day with a slight breeze is good with some clouds in the sky. I found seagulls like to hang in mid air and glide like a kite in the breeze. They are flying but the wind is moving under their wings and they are staying in one spot which helps get a shot. It's almost as if they are posing in mid air for you. Pick a good spot I know that there are lots of seagulls that hang out at the Borst Lake Park. This makes for lots of opportunities. Practice, Practice, Practice I was noticing some of the indications that they were about to take flight. If you study their habits it helps better your odds of getting a good picture. With practice you will also get better at cropping the picture as you take it. So there are some of my tips. I am sitting in my van in the Safeway parking lot using their WiFi as I add this information. Let me know if you have any other suggestions. Tomorrow it's off to the Home Show. I am guessing I will find lots of ideas for Intels there.

A seagull landing on top of the sign for Borst Lake

Ready for take off

Landing on this sign is tricky

You looking at ME?

Look I can stand on one foot!

Flying in different directions

A Handicapped seagull coming in for his spot

Hey you are out of formation

Are you leaving already?

OK that's close enough

I wonder who this seagull is waving to

Simon says look to the right

I found that to be very helpful. It was kinda like skeet shooting. I just listened for the sound of wings flapping and followed the action and just click click click. I have a lot of pictures of just sky and water.
Thank you for sharing these interesting tips on photographing seagulls, Franklyn. Some of the most common things around us, make for very interesting photos. We just have to pay attention!! Keep up the good work. Best wishes. Frederick

Paying attention is about all I can afford right now. I sure hope work in this area picks up soon. I spent the day at the homeshow today and gots lots of ideas for some new intels.
You take such beautiful pictures. Thanks for the arms length tip. I didn't think about it before. Also, may I use your seagull pictures on my site with your credits and link?

You can use any of my pictures on that basis. I took an online photography course and one of the things they said was if you give a 6 year old a camera and teach them how to use it, eventually EVEN THEY will take a GREAT picture "by accident" if they take enough pictures.
I'm probably the world's worst photographer, but thankfully I can appreciate good photos, thank you for your interesting insight into how to get great shots like yours. I will pass the link on to my daughter who also photographs birds both of which are her passion. Regards Marion

My son is a professional photographer. He takes pictures of horse shows which are in arenas with poor lighing with horses going a full speed with the focus changing contantly. He laughed and told me once that he learned a lot just reading the directions that came with the camera. He has a really good Digital SLR camera but even so it comes down to just taking a lot of pictures and keeping the best. In one weekend horseshow he can take 10,000 pictures or more. I go out with him whenever he is town and just watch and listen.
Loved your pictures! The tip about the arms length doesn't work for my pentax K something or another. It is a viewfinder DSLR camera, but the arms length would definitely be a good idea.

Thanks. I would have taken more but I got cold so I will go back to take more when the weather warms up.
I didn't see handicap placard on that gull.Great pictures.

I would love to get a picture of the cop trying to give the seagull a ticket for not having a handicap sticker on him.
