Tom Sawyer is my Hero
By Franklyn Gallup of WoodFloorist.com
Tom Sawyer is my hero and for good reason. I am not a very avid reader. The fact is I have only read about 6 books from beginning to end in my whole life and I am 57 years old. I have read Johnathan Livingston Seagull, Gone with the Wind, Acres of Diamonds, Esmereldas's Lovers, Valley of the Dolls and yes Tom Sawyer. It is amazing how large an impact Tom Sawyer has had on my life. To understand you would have to understand what I do for a living. I am a Wood Flooring Instructor. Most of the idea I got from Tom when he had to paint the fence. My business revolves around the theme of ,"Installing a wood floor or refinishing a wood floor is FUN. Pay me and I will let you help." People who want to do their own wood floors find me through my website and they become my temporary apprentices. Fortunately, I never got any ideas for my life from Valley of the Dolls but learned what to avoid. Gone with the Wind was more of a challenge I set for myself to read a book that big and I got a lot of satisfaction from actually finishing it. Johnathan Livingston was beneficial in learning life skills that I use and teach right along with the wood floors. Esmeralda's Lovers is one of my wife's books which included Smooth Finish. It's a story of the daughter of a floor man who takes up the trade and has some romance on the job with the tile man. But then that's another story! |

I enjoyed reading this Hub - it actually made me chuckle. I am the same age as you, but I read (on average) about a book a month. Sometimes I read one a week, other times I take on a very long book. No surprise then that I have read 'Tom Sawyer' - how neat that you have build your business around the fence-painting scene.
