Welcome to South Sound Speedway with pictures
By Franklyn Gallup of 2010Ferrari.com
I live about 4 miles from the South Sound Speedway. On Saturday night I can hear them racing up a storm over there. I was heading home form a job interview and thought what the heck I'll see if I can get some pictures. It was a nice night sunny day and perfect for taking pictures outside. We don't get too many of these kind of days up here in the Pacific Northwest and it was a Monday. The place was practically deserted. There were no trespassing signs all over the place so I wasn't quite sure how close I could get but I figured I would find out. A very nice lady came out and asked if she could help me. I told her that My son was going to be visiting soon and I wanted to get some information about the speedway. I think she was the grounds keeper and went to one of the buildings inside the main gate and I followed. She located and gave me a race schedule. I then asked if it would be OK to take some pictures of the track. She said that that would be fine. She said if I wanted I could go through the gate that was open next to her office and get some pictures from up above. It is amazing what happens if you ask in the right way. I took some pictures at track level. I took a close up of one wall which had been "modified" with the sides of tires. Black streaks of burnt rubber where cars had rubbed the walls. I went through the open gate and took some pictures of from up on top. I love to take pictures of interesting generic signs. I included some of those as well as pictures of the bleachers and track. Sound Sound Speedway is located just off Exit 88 on Interstate 5. It is almost halfway between Seattle, WA and Portland OR. For more information you can visit www.southsoundspeedway.com They offer a wide variety of racing including Super Stock, Street Stock, Mini Stock, Baby Grands, Limited Late Model, Bumblebee, Outlaw Compact, WESCO Sprints, Vintage stock and much more. South South Speedway is the fastest 3/8ths Mile on the West Coast. Chickens don't have a chance crossing this road. There was some roadwork on the road while I was driving to the track. I have added a few pictures from the roadwork. They really shouldn't allow flagmen to listen to Swan Lake on their I-pods while flagging roadwork. I saw another interesting sign on the way home.

Someone lost their spare tire

Roadwork flagman on the way to the racetrack

Would you follow someone who doesn't know the difference between a car and a truck?

I won the race today.

Speedway? We call them roads in Spain! As for that flagman - couldn't you have let him break wind in peace?
CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY
We have similar roads here near Seattle. A speedway is where people actually pay to see people drive like that. And here I thought the flagman was dancing.
Great pictures

Check out the videos in the external links as well.
I've never seen a racetrack when there was no action going on. Very interesting videos. Will and I still go to stockcar races and enjoy them. They use roll-bars as we did when I was a young powder puff racer so nobody usually gets hurt. It does LOOK dangerous though and I guess that is the attraction for some. High speed and the skill of the drivers has always been the attraction for me.

What do you mean no action going on? ....I was taking pictures I think some people go so they can yell all they want and no one can hear them over the sounds of the cars. What a great stress release. High speed is a good draw.
Didya ever get to see an actual race there? I like the beer booth sign... Does that mean that you only have to show and ID if you are OVER 21? As for the flagman - you can tell it wasn't Swan Lake -- He wasn't "on point"...

Good point on the sign. It could be read "No one under 21 years of age must show ID" Yes. My son and I went once. I wonder if maybe he was listening to the Hokey Pokey now that you mention it.
Exhilarating! I have never seen a spare tire that humungous!
CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY
You should see them trying to change a spare tire that big. Just getting it out of the trunk is a job.
Hah! If you have to put up with ambient noise it may as well be something fun. We have an outdoor shooting range about that distance from my place and it can get loud on soft summer evenings. I stay away from it because I am a tee-totaller and those who frequent the place are not, if you catch my drift.

Hmmm No that gives me an idea. Give paintball guns to the people in the stands at the stock car track. Or to the drivers.
