When Julia Childs talks people listen

One of my favorite business talks is my Julia Childs impersonation.

I have belonged to several business leads groups over the years. Not only are they very effective business networking groups, but they can help build your self confidence.

Business leads groups like LeTip and BNI are groups that meet once a week. Often these groups are at a restaurant so you can multitask breakfast or lunch with business networking.

There can be only one person for each business classification so there is no competition. Each person stands up and gives a 30 second or 60 second oral "commercial" to the group about his or her business. Since this is done every week each person know a lot about all the other members of the group and can easily refer prospects to the other members during the course of the week. These referrals are called leads.

I am in the wood flooring business so I would practice my commercial as I worked.

Sometimes five or more of these groups get together and have a huge networking lunch. My Julia Childs talk occured at one of these events.

I picked up an ironing board for my table. I also bought a smock to cover my suit at a thrift store. Everyone was giving their monotone talk about their business and i was one of the last to speak.

I set up my ironing board and put on my smock and began to speak in a high falsetto voice and imitated the pauses and emphasis that Julia Childs has.

Today we are going to make sandpaper pies. As you might well suspect the main ingredient in sandpaper pies is .....sandpaper

I was using a cutter that I use in the trade to cut edger discs. This is kinda like an upside-down cookie cutter. By tapping on the sandpaper over the cutter with a small wooden mallet a perfectly round edger disc results. I was cutting one out as I talked.

..as you make sandpaper pies you need to be careful not to get your finger under the mallet as this could be very painful.

I held up the finished edger disc for all to see.

I got a standing ovation. Something I had never seen before or since. These were doctors, lawyers, accountant, and business owners from many different fields. It was a real confidence builder.

I talked to someone several weeks later and he told me that he had to leave early for that meeting. He got to the door just about to leave when I started my talk. He said he froze and just had to hear my talk when he heard the high pitched voice and had to listen.

You could use this same technique to promote your business offline as well. It is very effective. Push your comfort level each week and your confidence with talking to people will grow very quickly.
