Why did the Raccoon cross the road?

By Franklyn Gallup of WoodFloorist.com

I was heading to put the final coat of finish on a wood floor. I had just finished a good lunch and was looking forward to completing the job.

I suddenly noticed something strange in the road ahead so I slowed down. As I got closer I realized that this was a family of raccoons crossing the road.

Why they were crossing the road? I really don't know for sure but if I had to guess I would say it was the mother raccoon's fault. She probably looked up and saw my truck coming and said to her children, "Quick run out in the road so you catch this guy's attention. He'll probably stop and take pictures of us. Then he'll write an article about us on the Internet and we'll all be famous. Hurry!"

Now I have no way of knowing if that's exactly what happened but if it did then the mother raccoon was pretty smart. The raccoons in the road did catch my attention. I did stop and take pictures. In fact I did decide to write an article about it and you are reading it now. Now whether they become famous or not is up to you.

As they were leaving I did hear them making some raccoon sounding noises. I think one said that his name was Ernie and another one said something I can't repeat here. Some raccoons just have no sense of humor.

I was a little surprised how they posed for the camera. They crossed the road several times for me and did some group poses as well.

Raccoons are very common here in Washington state. This is the second time I have stumbled across a family of raccoons with my camera close by. Raccoons usually have one litter called kits of one to eight young raccoons per year.

As far as I can tell there were four racoons in this family but there could have been five. They were constantly moving and somewhat curious. I expected them to scurry away when I stopped the truck but they didn't leave right away.

Raccoons are something called omnivorous. That’s a fancy way of saying that they will eat anything. Some of their favorite things are frogs, crayfish, nuts and berries and garbage.

I did a little research on raccoons and found out that they can rotate (point backwards) their hind feet, making it easy for them to climb down a tree headfirst. I don't think I want to try doing that.

A raccoon's hands are so nimble they can unlace a shoe, unlatch a cage and deftly retrieve coins as thin as dimes from your shirt pocket. If you are missing any change check to see if there are any raccoons around.

If you have any ideas for naming these raccoons I would love to read your suggestions.

I am glad you enjoyed it.

Once again you're tempting me to move to Washington, USA. I have never come across raccoons crossing the road here in the Philippines. Plenty of pythons, and they sure ain't as cute as your little gang. But why are you naming them? If he said his name is Ernie, the other one's gotta be Bert.

OK so one is Bert and one must be Ernie but what about the other two then? Heck I have named my floor sanding equipment. Nellie is the drum sander (named after a workhorse) Ernie is the edger, and the square buffer is Blue! I talk to my floor equipment all the time.

They're also pretty good at getting into tent trailers and stealing food. But that's another story, :)

I have heard that they are very smart and mischievous

One night my daughter awoke to get a drink of water. While looking into the bathroom mirror, she saw a raccoon staring back at her. She lives in a busy city and evidently the raccoon came through the cat door to have a midnight snack of kitty food! Indeed, she was surprised! Fun intel, thanks.

Egad! how did I miss this one in August?
Living in Eastern WA, we didn't see the loads of raccoons like there are here in Western WA.
Sad to see so many get hit by vehicles.
Not so sad that they dig through my compost!
Late one night 2 'coons were in the neighbors front yard and when I pulled the car close to them, they stared at us as if we were the intruders! They didn't even budge when I got out of the car & walked over to them, clapping my hands to move them along. I'm counting my chickens very carefully.

You have to 'name' one Ricky. My mom used to tell us stories about Ricky Raccoon and all his adventures in the big woods behind our house. They sure are cute, but they also are huge trouble makers. And they love to raid my chicken house! I hope they stay far away from my farm.
