Why should you believe in evolution?
By Franklyn Gallup of Biblefree.org
The question, "Why should you believe in evolution?" is not a simple one. Doesn't everyone believe in evolution? Actually, the answer to the second question is NO! Often times this question comes down to a consideration of Biblical accounts vs scientific facts. Many feel that Biblical accounts and science are at odds with each other on this subject. I just finished attending a Jehovah's Witness Convention as a guest and the topic of evolution was one to the major topics considered. I am NOT currently a Witness nor have I ever been one, however I find many of their beliefs I agree with. I look for truth anyplace I can find it. Don't you? I objectively consider evidence and then come to a conclusion which is subject to change when I learn new evidence. I can tell you that Jehovah's Witnesses consider a lot of evidence. They don't come to conclusions in a vacuum. They list 51 references they used including the page number where their information came from in their new brochure, "The origin of life. Five questions worth asking". Many people have preconceived ideas about Jehovah's Witnesses. If you considered their evidence without knowing they were Jehovah's Witnesses you could easily mistake them for scientists. Most people fall into 3 major groups when it comes to evolution. 1) It's a scientific fact that evolution is true. There is lots of scientific facts that support this. 2) The Universe was created in six 24 hour days according to Genesis. 3) The Universe was created in six days of undetermined length since the length of the days is not mentioned in Genesis. Which group do you fall into? The 5 questions considered are: How Did Life Begin? Is Any Form of Life Really Simple? Where Did the Instructions Come From? Has All Life Descended From a Common Ancestor? Is It Reasonable to believe the Bible? How Did Life Begin? Could life really spontaneously spring from non-living chemicals? What are the chances that such and event could happen? One of the things you might want to consider in this question is that researchers have tried to simulate the conditions that existed in earth's early history using chemicals. They have succeeded in producing some of the molecules found in living things in this research. If the chemicals in the experiment represent the earth's early environment and the molecules produced represent the building blocks of life, whom or what does the scientist who preformed the experiment represent? Does he or she represent blind chance or an intelligent entity? If you would like a copy ask any Jehovah's Witness for a copy. If you have some thoughts on this issue add your comments |

What many people see as evolution is really little more than natural selection - the adoption or enhancement of particular aspects of an organism which allows a better survival rate. Evolution does not explain and cannot explain the massive biodiversity that we see around us. The observations of Darwin and others do not explain the creation of species nor the many interdependencies that have developed in the natural world. All life on Earth has developed from a single root source but the lengthy process of evolution simply does not work when you try to explain why a single celled creature that is virtually immortal and lives in a massive abundance of nutrients should need to change.

I hadn't considered the "need to change". That's a very good point.
I have often wondered if perhaps there is a third option, or fourth, or fifth or more. We have come up with only two possibilities -- Evolution or Creationism -- what if the truth is something different altogether?
CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY
I think that is very possible. One friend of mine told me once that he feels the Bible is not about where God is but where he's been. That God is still out there creating more Universe. Another question is does our understanding it or not understanding it change it? Notice I said, "Most people fall into 3 major groups" and not ALL people.
June has beaten me to it again...I agree, there may be other options, or some combination of these factors. I'm generally open, too bad I won't be around long enough to find out all of the answers.

Option 3 is the choice I find most appealing. Genesis could tell be telling us WHO the great designer is and evolution could be the HOW it was created. Without the 24 hour day time line many other options become possible to consider. June is fast. Better luck next time
I'm pleased to see that evolution and creatinism are no longer accepted as the two alternatives. My own thoughts are that we should not be looking at the way changes occur but WHY they occur. In some environments and in some species there appear to have been no evolutionary changes at all. Sharks, for example, seem to have achieved a measure of development which sees them at the top of the food chain and also impervious to virtually any diseases that fish or mammals are subject to - and yet the fossil record shows that they have not changed at all for many millions of years. If we know what drives the change, maybe we can work out the mechanism by which they take place.

I like your logical approach.
"Most people fall into 3 major groups when it comes to evolution." I'm obviously in group 4 - I believe that all questions about Man's origins are irrelevant until He starts behaving sensibly.

I stand corrected. New evidence. OK 4 groups.
I think this link may help answer some of your questions about the length of a day in the Genesis account of creation. Six Days and the Eisegesis Problem, Ken Ham Answers in Genesis is the name of Ken Ham's organization and can give many valid answers to your questions.

Great video. I have watched it several times now. Thanks for some new information to consider. Very good points Ken makes.
