Yankeedooku went to town, A-riding on a pony

Yankeedooku is a new game I thought of on waking up this morning. I am very concerned about the direction this country is headed and this game will help to circulate the comments of like minded people that would like to get back to the values the United States of America was founded on.

It is very similar to a very popular puzzle but instead of the numbers 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9 Yankeedooku uses nine letters. W-A-S-H-I-N-G-T-O (N is used only once)

It consists of 6 puzzles which will be found as pictures at the bottom of this Intel. More will bee added later.

This game is to renew the spirit of the Founding Fathers. Dare I say this a revolutionary game?

The objective is to fill the 9×9 grid with letters so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3×3 sub-grids that compose the grid contains all of the letters W-A-S-H-I-N-G-T-O.

I currently own the domain name Yankeedooku.com. Until this Intel is published it redirects to my profile. As soon as this is screened and published the domain name will redirect to this Intel.

Save the pictures and pass them onto your friends and family. The first puzzles are fairly easy. The later puzzles are more difficult but not impossible.

To make the puzzles simply click on each picture, click on the resulting picture, and print. Then back browser till you get to the Intel again and repeat with the next picture.

The process of creating a new idea

1. The concept

The idea was to create puzzles using the word WASHINGTON instead of numbers and create it with a patriotic theme.

2. Researching

I soon found that I couldn't find a puzzle creation program that would let me substitute letters for numbers in this kind of puzzle.

One may exist but I haven't found it yet. If you know of one let me know in a comment.

I also soon realized that WASHINGTON has 10 letters and not 9 like I had first thought and that "N" is repeated twice.
I wasn't fully awake yet when I had the idea. The question then was do I just scrap the whole idea of do I modify the idea. I decided to modify the idea.

3.Application

Seeing as I couldn't find a puzzle creating program I decided to try having a blank puzzle as the background and put letters over the picture. My weakness in Photoshop type programs just ended in frustration.

I decided to try using a table with HTML to make a grid and add the letters in the appropriate squares. This is what I did and found that the columns without a "W" in them were narrower. I solved this problem but creating a 10th row at the bottom with all W's in it. This solved the width problem.

I then had my wife print out the resulting web pages. (My printer is out of ink) I used a magic marker to darken the lines to create the 3 x 3 squares and the border. I know they aren't perfectly straight but then these are prototypes good enough for market evaluation.

I then photographed the resulting hard copy of the puzzles.

4.Market testing

Actually, this is where you come in. Is this a good idea or not. Suggestions for improvement. What do you like. What don't you like. Ideas for distribution.

5.Making Changes

Using the feedback tweaking the concept to be better.

6.Repeat steps 4 and 5

Making changes and retesting is essential to any new idea. These two steps need to be repeated until a satisfactory result is achieved.

7.Market the final result

This could be applying suggestions for distribution. An email campaign. Search Engine placement. Affiliate web pages. Newspaper ads. Promoting the domain name.

So give me your thoughts both good and bad. This Intel is about the process of creating an idea, ANY IDEA more than the idea itself. I'm letting you share in the process. Take whatever you learn from participating and apply it to your own ideas.

A great idea but do you really want to encourage miss-spelling this way?

I accept that it is convenient for the puzzle to have nine blocks of nine squares so why not G E O R G E 1 S T since he was your first president?

I considered several other words. GEORGE1ST would work as it has nine letters however it also has two G's.

I chose to stay with Washington since it is politically neutral. It is the name of my state, the name of the US Capital, is the name in many outstanding colleges, many banks, The name of our first president and even the name of a famous football player,

Among the other words I considered were:

Liberty - Only seven letters.

Constitution - 12 letters and many duplicates.

Franklin - 8 letters and two n's

Hannity - 7 letters and two n's

Glenn Beck - 9 letters but two e's and two n's

Bill O'Reilly - 11 letters and way too many l's

Perhaps some of the above have their names on Google Alert and will join in the discussion.

As far as misspelling words I am not about to tell XEROX that it should be ZEROX or Toys R US that "are" is spelled A-r-e or that there should be a "u" in Q..... Misspelling intentionally can be a marketing strategy in itself.

You have gone to so much work with this idea that I am not going to throw cold water on you. Like..wake up. ;) Some of my best intels come from dreams. hmmmm. theoldcoot has a valid point though. George1st might be a good idea?!?!?! Whatever, I always enjoy what you write. Keep it coming, please.

It's 3:44 AM and I woke up before I had another crazy dream idea Thanks for holding off on the cold water.

Perhaps I can get back to sleep after I finish with this comment.

I did go and change the redirect on the domain name. Yankeedooku.com now redirects to this Intel. It may take a bit for the change to take effect.

I am open to any suggestions on better words to use. I almost said, "Forget it" but that's what happens to a lot of good ideas.

L. Frank Baum was burning The Wonderful Wizard of OZ due to self criticism and overwhelming rejection until his wife stopped him.

I figured I would do a market test and see what happens.

I have to say I like this somewhat better than the version involving numbers, which is just headache-inducing. I'd like it even better if KUSINIC had 9 letters.

I did find one possibility this morning. Bold Fresh has nine unique letters. I will make a few samples later today.

I think you may have stumbled on to something. (Even a blind pig finds an acorn sometimes). I'm not a puzzle person AT ALL, but it sounds like an idea that puzzle people would like.

Great idea! I'll give the intell 5 stars and NOT add it to my list of nonsensical comments from Franklyn.

It looks interesting. Not being an American, I won't be passing it along, but good luck to you. I encourage you to follow your dream. There is no telling what will catch on and what will not. Remember the pet rock? Imagine the reaction that guy got when he came up with the idea. LOL

Thanks for reading. Do you have ideas that you would like to develop? The same steps work for just about any idea.

I have just found information on how to make these puzzles better and faster. I just made a Bold Fresh puzzle so I am learning new skills in the development stage.

I am going to be working next on a puzzle using V-A-N-C-O-U-V-E-R which is a name with 9 unique letters. Perfect! Thanks for the idea.

Well, I think that this has possibilities Franklyn.

First, I think that you should investigate the patent on the original game. It appears that you are simply subbing the letters for the numbers. This may deemed to be too close to the original concept for commercial purposes. I think probably not but...

If your idea is to be patriotic, think out of the box. Why does it have to be 9 numbers? What's wrong with 10 letters that repeat some of them, or 7 letters? Of course, you'd have to figure out all of the algorithms. Not a simple thing, that. But this would allow you to use several names for your puzzles.

Make it attractive looking -- colorful.

Once you have it all figured out, try contacting magazines and newspapers (either paper or ezine). Get some to include your puzzles every week. Develop a following. Or do it on Facebook.

Meanwhile, write a book. You could:
1. Simply make it a puzzle book
2. Have an accurate (as accurate as you can make it) biography on each patriotic character followed by puzzles for that character. You could even include puzzles for events associated with that character. For example, for Washingto (n) -- "Trenton" or "Trento", etc.

But think this one through. Don't go off half-cocked. Plan it out, and lay it out. Hire a graphic designer and any other people that have expertise that you can use. Don't try and do it by yourself. This is a big enough idea to become a big enough project to have a "staff" of people working on it. Become the "Producer" and oversee the project letting your peeps do their areas of expertise.

Where do you find these people? Try schools. Some will give credit to their students for working on stuff like this -- for free or minimal cost.

But you have to have it planned out. I think it's doable, but it ain't something that you are going to be able to just throw together.

I just sent Bill O'Reilly an email with the link to A Bold Fresh Puzzle and the link to Yankeedooku.com so I am going to see if anything comes of that.

As far as the rest of it I am just starting to explore the possibilities. I believe if I help enough people get what they want I will end up with more than I could ever want.

Enough ideas have been thrown out here to keep you going. I would just like to give you a thumbs up and wait to see what your creative juices turn up. Go Franklyn, Go!

You are welcome. This puzzle just needs words with nine unique letters. I just found this resource tonight for 9 letter words.

I just have to sort out which words have 9 unique letters. This could take a while

Looks like you have some people hooked already. I would participate, but have to be packing for a little trip instead. 'Fraid I am going to be offline long enough to get very behind on commenting to people's intels, too. Oh, well.

I agree with Nick that I like the idea of using letters better than numbers, and anything to create solidarity among the people because sometimes I feel like of of Richard III's troops, holding out among the "happy few."
